Jacopo Staiano is Senior Assistant Professor (RTDb) at the Department of Economics & Management, University of Trento (Italy). Previously, he served as Head of Research at reciTAL.ai, as research affiliate at Data-Pop Alliance, as senior data scientist at Fortia Financial Solutions, as post-doctoral researcher at LIP6, UPMC - Sorbonne Universités, and at the Mobile and Social Computing Lab, Fondazione Bruno Kessler (TN, Italy). He obtained his PhD under supervision of Prof. Nicu Sebe at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento (Italy).
He has obtained the bachelor degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa (Italy) in 2003, a MA in Sonic Arts from the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queen’s University of Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK) in 2005, and a MSc in Human Language Technologies and Interfaces from the University of Trento (Italy) in 2010.
In 2008 he joined the Intelligent Systems Lab of the University of Amsterdam, where he has worked on several computer vision and affective computing projects. He has visited the Ambient Intelligence Research Lab, Stanford University (under supervision of Prof. Hamid Aghajan, May-July 2010), the Human Dynamics Lab, MIT Media Lab (under supervision of Prof. Alex Pentland, October 2011 and August-September 2013), and Telefonica I+D (under supervision of Scientific Director Nuria Oliver, November 2013-February 2014).
His works range from modeling the behavior of humans when interacting with technology to modeling behavioral dynamics in small groups; from understanding the relationship between personality and social network structure as derived from Call Detail Records, to the analysis of virality dynamics in online social networking sites.
He has received the Honorable Mention at ACM DIS 2012, the Best Paper Award at ACM UbiComp 2014, the UMUAI James Chen Award 2016, participated to the winning submission at SemEval 2017, task 5.2, and obtained an Outstanding Paper Award at EACL 2023.
His latest works focus on Natural Language Generation.
